F1-Returner Ocon: It was a very strange time

After Esteban Ocon had to pause without a formula-1 cockpit last year, the anticipation of his comeback in the royal class was great. But the late cancellation of the season ticket in Australia and the subsequent delay of the season due to Corona again extended the French race break.

I have been waiting a very, very long time. One and a half years are just crazy, it seems like everything is going against me so I can restart,”says Ocon at a press conference with selected media, including”” It was certainly a very strange time.”But he knew how to use the forced pause.

“I understood it as a longer time of preparation, as a time to prepare myself,”the 23-year-old assures. As difficult as his transition year, when he was a Mercedes replacement pilot, he did not feel the new pause: “This year it is a different feeling.”

Ocon: Finally again a challenge in front of his eyes

Finally, he now knows, that a “great team” and a “great challenge with a competitive car” are waiting for him. With that in mind, you have a goal that is quite different from trying to find a challenge. I knew what I was working for, and I am hungry for a new start.”

Since its last Formula One start in November 2018, Ocon has only participated in five test days, three of which were based on the pre-season tests with Renault, where the Frenchman 2020 is under contract. The final preparations were made during a private test day on the Red Bull Ring at the end of June by car from 2018.

“I felt good when I was back in the car. It was so cool to get on the right track after spending so much time with e-sports,”the Renault pilot swarms. It was a great feeling to get back to the real racetrack. After such a long time coming out of the garage, it is a special feeling.”

Development: Renault has prepared itself meticulously

And this is what makes it fly: Until it came back into swing, it did not take long, says Ocon. I felt good, I felt sharp, I felt fast, so definitely ready for the restart in Austria.”There Renault will start with a triple update, as team leader Cyril Abiteboul confirmed.

Ocon says:”The car will be very different from the car, That we should drive in Australia, which is crazy, because some of the parts we’ll never drive. On Friday we will collect a hell of a lot of data to see where we have improved and how everything will feel.”
