The German women’s national handball team has won the general challenge before the important playoffs against Russia. Before 1703 spectators in Oldenburg, the DHB selection defeated the Netherlands with 31:29 (18:17).
“I am pleased that we were successful. But I was not satisfied with the defense,”said Federal trainer Jakob Vestergaard.
Again and again the Dutch women came to simple meetings. Too often the German defense was not in the picture. Especially in the first half of the year, we have made far too many mistakes,”said Vestergaard.”We have made far too many mistakes.” We must now find solutions and work. In the next few days it is always said to train, train.”
It was much better for the German team in the offensive. 31 hits are a lot, we have done well,”said the trainer. Especially Xenia Smits from HSG Blomberg/Lippe (six hits), Julia Behnke (TuS Metzingen/2) and Isabell Klein (Buxtehuder SV/3) convinced the Danes.
The coach has small worries in the gatekeeper position. Champion-League winner Clara Woltering (Buducnost Podgorica) has problems with her back at high training intensity and was only used in the final phase because the second Torfrau Katja Pupil injured herself against the Netherlands.
“As it looks, Katja is not so bad,” said Vestergaard. “It is not so bad.” I was trying to protect Clara completely. In an important game, however, she could have played.”
Next Sunday, Dessau (15.15 o’clock/Sport1) will play the playoff against Russia’s record champion. The rematch takes place on June 13th in Astrachan. Only the winner qualifies for the World Championship in Denmark from the 5th to 20th of December and gets the chance to participate in the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
