Valtteri Bottas has not regretted his change from Williams to Mercedes after almost a year. I am happy to be here today,”the Finnish betrays at the FIA gala in Paris and explains in view of his first season at the silver arrows:”I was able to win some races and get some poles. I enjoyed that very much.”
Bottas won three overall victories and ended the year in third place behind Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.
In sporting terms, it was not a perfect year for Nico Rosberg’s successor, because he could not compete for the title in the end. The 28-year-old himself explains that for him it was above all a learning year.” Before, I drove only for Williams,”recalls Bottas, who completed his first Formula One season with the team from Grove. Until 2017, he didn’t start for any other team.
Bottas: “Learned a lot”
“When you change the team and meet so many new people and get to know a different way of working, you see things again from a different angle. It was very interesting,”Bottas explains and reveals:”In all my years in Formula One, I have never learned more than in this one.”Some lessons have also been”quite hard”this season.
“You learn something new every year and become more experienced. On the way, you experience new situations,”Bottas explains and confesses:”I had to work on many things, learn from them and get better. Especially after the summer break, the Finnish man found it extremely difficult to keep up with the pace of teammate Hamilton.” In some races I had problems,”he confesses.
After all: Towards the end of the year Bottas rehabilitated himself with, among other things, a victory at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. The first year at Mercedes he sees positive overall, at least on a human level. It has not changed me as a person,”he assures. 2018 he wants to take the next step in his second Mercedes season, and fight to the end for the World Cup title.
